Chengdu to Daocheng Yading: How to Get There (and When)

Updated 2026-11-08 · 10 min read · Chengdu Overseas Tourism Co., Ltd. (L-SC-CJ00011)
Short answer: the classic is 7 days by road — Chengdu, Xinduqiao, Litang, two nights at Daocheng, then two park days in Yading — because the road pace acclimatises you properly. Flying saves days but lands you at 4,411 m with no adjustment; most travellers fly out, not in.

The three ways to get there

RouteTime from ChengduVerdict
Fly to Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY)1 h flight + 2–3 h drive to the parks areaFast but harsh: the airport sits at 4,411 m — the world's highest civilian airport — and landing straight into thin air is how AMS stories begin
Bus / coach via the G3182 days up, stopping at Kangding, Xinduqiao, LitangThe honest route: altitude steps up gradually and the road itself is the attraction
Self-drive / private car with driver2 days each way, flexible stopsBest of both — pacing plus freedom — but long; most visitors hire a local driver

The 7-day route we actually run

DayRouteSleep at
D1Chengdu arrival — private transfer, easy afternoonChengdu (500 m)
D2G4218 expressway to Kangding, climb over Zheduo Pass (4,298 m)Xinduqiao (3,460 m)
D3Tagong grassland and monastery, then the high road to LitangLitang (4,014 m)
D4Over Haizi Shan's boulder fields into the Daocheng valleyDaocheng (3,750 m)
D5Yading: the short line — Pearl Lake under XiannairiShangri-la town (2,900 m)
D6Yading: the long line — milk lake & five-colour lake (4,700 m)Shangri-la town
D7Return east, or continue to Zhongdian / Lijiang—

Note the pacing: two nights at Daocheng before the first park day, and the demanding 4,700 m walk held back to day six. That structure is what turns Yading from an endurance test into a highlight.

Tickets, shuttle and what it costs

Yading charges an entrance ticket plus a mandatory park shuttle; horse segment and battery-car options are add-ons inside. Prices change seasonally and with national discount policies — check the official announcement for your dates, or let your operator quote them current. Bring your passport: foreign guests buy real-name tickets against the document you travel with.

Field note — The park's two lines are not equal. The short line (Pearl Lake) is an easy grassland walk; the long line to Milk Lake and Five-Colour Lake at 4,700 m is a genuine high-altitude hike — start early, carry layers, and rent the battery-car if legs are short on time.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Yading itself?

Two park days is the sweet spot: one short line, one long line. The road journey from Chengdu adds 2 days each way by land, or pair the flight with 2 road days.

Can I fly to Yading instead of the long road?

You can — Daocheng Yading Airport is spectacular — but landing at 4,411 m gives no acclimatisation. Most operators fly you in only after a road acclimatisation, or fly you out after the parks.

When do Yading tickets sell out?

During October and Chinese public holidays the park caps daily entries; book real-name tickets days ahead in that window.
